CHAPTER VIII

Skozar was a planet veiled in storm clouds and a sickly green atmosphere, and it was storming just like it had been when she last visited. But when they landed on the docks closest to the maximum security prison where Azira was incarcerated, the storm was the harshest she’d ever seen. In the past, the tempests seemed to be in the distance. Today, lightning flashed every minute, with accompanying booms loud enough for Admeera to jump out of her skin. If a bolt had struck her, it wouldn’t have hurt her at all, but the storm was raging just overhead shouting its displeasure at their arrival.

She ordered her crew to remain on the ship while she accompanied Ezret to the prison. Admeera let Ezret lead the way and refrained from sprinting toward the compound to escape the ferocity of the thundering around them. Despite her best efforts to match his slower pace, the booming piqued her anxiety. Ezret’s pointed ears were effective filters for this type of sound, but hers certainly weren’t.

Black, reflective buildings were in the distance, but she and Ezret kept them in their periphery as they instead wandered through the less manicured district toward the prison. Slabs of slate rocks jutted from the earth, acting as sentries to a large black, square tower, illuminated by the lightning.

“What did Erafors discuss with you?” Ezret asked.

Admeera felt the ghost of the kiss on her lips, but then she dismissed it instantly. She recalled his encouragement to use her anger to her advantage and her initial resistance to the idea. Being a non-confrontational person, Ezret would be very displeased to hear that suggestion and even more disappointed to learn that she was going to attempt it.

“I’d rather not talk about it right now.”

Ezret did not press further, but she could tell he was suppressing another question.

“If you’re worried that he put me in an awkward situation, he didn’t,” Admeera said.

Ezret’s sharp exhale signaled that she answered the right question.

Admeera assumed the tower was their final destination and it was one of the most ominous prisons she’d ever seen. It towered above most other buildings and while it was still black slate like most of the others on the planet she’d seen, this one was windowless. It was more like a gravestone that loomed over the town in the distance. It was almost as if the building was commanding everyone to stay away, and she wanted nothing more than to do just that and go back to her ship.

Once they would enter the prison, she was unsure if Ezret wanted her to observe the conversation from security cameras or stay completely in the dark about their conversation. She guessed that Azira wanted no part in helping her, and she might provide Ezret more information if he lied and said Admeera had not accompanied him.

“How are you feeling?” she asked.

“I’m not worried about this encounter,” he said, “but I do wonder what she will ask for in return.”

Admeera was unsure what Azira would solicit since not much could help her while she was confined.
